As renowned Ophthalmologists with decades of experience and a keen interest in academics, research and philanthropy, we have identified a need for increased research and training in eye conditions that have a high impact on the lives of South Africans, and we want to achieve that.

South African eye health
Research
Through our foundation and network of global leaders, we seek to bring together our collective knowledge, skills, and expertise to advance research, education, and training in ophthalmology and eye health. Our goal is to publish high-quality academic papers that make a meaningful contribution to the field through their insights and findings. Specifically, we are focused on research which is representative of, and for the benefit of, the African context.
Education
As leading medical specialists, our board places great value on academic excellence and firmly believes that access to education should be fair and inclusive. We have identified a significant gap in the public health sector—particularly in the limited opportunities available to medical professionals wishing to pursue further specialization. To bridge this gap, our foundation offers bursaries and training positions to eligible candidates, enabling them to train in the field of ophthalmology. Upon completion of their studies, these candidates may be offered further fellowship positions or training and mentorship opportunities at the Atlantic Eye Specialist Centre, helping to lay the groundwork for a successful career in ophthalmology.
Service Delivery
As practicing eye specialists, we are deeply committed to improving the delivery of eye care in South Africa, a need we believe is both urgent and critical. Tackling this challenge involves identifying the barriers to accessible eye healthcare, fostering relationships between public and private institutions, and establishing collaborative agreements aimed at enhancing service delivery. While achieving this will require the cooperation of multiple stakeholders—we remain steadfast in our commitment to overcoming these obstacles to ensure that all South Africans can access quality eye care.
