Training Tomorrow's Ophthalmologists
South Africa faces a growing shortage of ophthalmologists at a time when demand for specialist eye care continues to rise. We are committed to strengthening the ophthalmology workforce by expanding access to clinical, surgical, academic, and research training opportunities for Medical Officers and registrars. Through mentorship, hands-on experience, and academic development, we help equip the next generation of specialists with the skills needed to reduce preventable blindness and improve eye care outcomes across South Africa.
Improving Service Delivery
Thousands of South Africans continue to live with avoidable vision loss while waiting for access to specialist eye care and sight-restoring surgery. We work to reduce public-sector surgical backlogs and expand access to high-quality ophthalmic services for underserved communities. By partnering with healthcare providers, hospitals, and donors, we help restore sight, improve quality of life, and ensure more patients receive the timely care they need.
Advancing South African
Eye Research
Research plays a critical role in improving patient outcomes, informing clinical practice, and strengthening healthcare systems. We support high-quality ophthalmic research focused on South Africa’s unique eye health challenges, generating evidence that is relevant to local patients and providers. Through research collaboration and academic mentorship, we also create valuable opportunities for Medical Officers and registrars to develop the skills needed to become future clinician-scientists and leaders in ophthalmology.
